Fabric Choices for custom shadesails
We offer a large choice of fabrics and colors for our custom shadesails.
Shadecloth is made from HDPE (High Density Poly-Ethylene) which is extruded into long tape like strings. This tape is twisted into denser strings called mono-filaments. The cloth itself is knitted using a combination of the mono-filaments (for strength) and tape (for sun block). Most shadecloth is rated at 95% which means that 5% is open weave and allows the air to escape from underneath.
We offer 4 grades of shadecloths, Comtex and Monotec 370 in three different versions. These are 10 oz and 12 oz per sq. yd. offering different strength and stretch characteristics.
Comtex is considered Commercial Grade and can support spans up to 50' comfortably. With 17 colors to choose from Comtex is a very versatile shadecloth and comprises the majority of shadesails we manufacture.
For sails larger than 1000 sq ft we recommend considering a higher grade cloth such as Monotec 370. This is the highest quality shadecloth available and uses only mono-filaments, no tape, making it stronger and denser than the 10 oz Comtex. All of these fabrics carry carry a UV Degradation Warranty of 10 Years and Architec 400 has a 12 Year UV Warranty. Monotec remains cleaner than other shadecloths due to it's round thread shape a fewer nooks and crannies to trap and retain dust and debris
Comtex shadecloth is Fire Retardent meeting both the ASTM E-84 and NFPA 701 standard although it no longer meets the CA Fire Marshall standard. Monotec 370 FR meets all Fire Codes.
